Swimming North Ayrshire: Scottish National Age Group Championship

North Ayrshire swimmers enjoyed great success at their last competition – the Scottish National Age Group Championships.

It has been a long time for these young athletes who had been unable to compete in this competition for three years due to Covid cancellations.

The 16-swimmer team won five medals and a string of personal bests at this year’s event.

The North Ayrshire club’s biggest medal haul has come from 14-year-old Lewis Gibson of Kilwinning.

He was crowned Scottish National Champion in the 400m and 200m freestyle. He also won a silver medal in the 100m freestyle and a bronze medal in the 200m breaststroke.

Emma Binnie, 13, of Skelmorlie, also had a successful competition with a silver medal in the 800m freestyle and a number of personal bests in a variety of other events.

Competing among Scotland‘s best, many other competitors from North Ayrshire have posted impressive results.

Fraser Cowie, 14, of Dalry, had a fantastic competition with four top-10 finishes in the 100m backstroke, 50m butterfly, 200m backstroke and 100m butterfly; as well as a host of personal best times.

And Heather Stuart, 15, also of Dalry and Adam Currie, 15, of Irvine had eight top 20 finishes in the 100m backstroke, 50m freestyle, 200m freestyle and 50m butterfly, 200m backstroke, 50m freestyle, 100m butterfly and 100m freestyle.

Other swimmers celebrating individual success at the national event included Dean Binnie from Skelmorlie, 13, Zoe Matchett from West Kilbride, 15, Rachel McGuire from Saltcoats, 16, and Kouper Sloss from Largs, 12 year.

The club has also put together successful relay teams with Isla Waller, 15, Zoe Matchett, Rachel McGuire and Heather Stuart as well as Adam Currie, Fraser Cowie, Lewis Gibson and Stewart Reid, 15, in the category 14-16 year olds.

Emma Binnie, Emily McGuire, 11, Ruby McInnes, 11, and Kate Stuart, 13, competed in the girls 11-13 event, and Dean Binnie, Sam Currie, 11, Kyle Saunderson, 12 and Kouper Sloss competed in the boys’ 11-13 relay.
